Snow Removal 101: What Every Toronto Homeowner Needs to Know

What triggers a service? Do you need plowing or shoveling? How does pricing work? We break down everything about residential snow removal in the GTA — no fluff.

If you've never hired a snow removal service before — or had a bad experience with one — this guide is for you. We'll cover exactly how professional residential snow removal works in the GTA, what to look for, and what questions to ask before you sign.

When does service trigger?

Most residential services (ours included) use a "trigger depth" — a minimum accumulation before we dispatch. The standard in the GTA is 2 inches (5cm). Below that, we don't come out. Above it, we do — automatically, without you needing to call.

Some customers want a higher trigger (4–6cm) to save on per-visit costs. Others want a lower one (1–2cm) so their driveway stays pristine at all times. This is negotiable upfront — make sure your contract specifies it.

Plowing vs. shoveling — what's the difference?

Plowing uses a truck-mounted plow to push snow to the edges of your driveway. It's fast, efficient, and ideal for standard-width driveways (16+ feet). The limitation: tight driveways, cars in the way, or a narrow approach near the street can make plowing difficult.

Shoveling is hand-labour — a crew member clears with a shovel or power snow blower. Slower and more expensive per visit, but better for narrow driveways, post-storm salting detail, walkways, and steps. Many customers need a combination: plow the driveway, hand-clear the walkway and steps.

What's included in a seasonal plan?

Seasonal plans typically include unlimited visits from a set start date (usually November 1) through end of season (April 30). No per-storm charges no matter how many times it snows. You pay one flat fee at the start of the season (or in installments).

Most plans include the driveway only. Walkways, steps, salting, and vehicle brushing are common add-ons. Read your contract carefully — "driveway clearing" usually means just the driveway, not the path to your door.

What does "cleared by 7 AM" actually mean?

Reputable companies clear overnight snowfalls before most people leave for work. For heavy storms, this means crews start at 2–3 AM and work through to 7–8 AM to cover their entire route. If you're on a large company's route, you may get cleared later — ask how many properties they service per crew and what their typical route completion time is.

At Home Bros, most of our routes are sized so we're done before 7 AM on standard snowfall nights. Big storms (15cm+) can push that to 9–10 AM.

How much does snow removal cost in the GTA?

For a single-car driveway in Mississauga, Brampton, or surrounding areas (2024–25 season pricing):

  • Seasonal plan (unlimited): $699–$899 for a standard single driveway
  • Per-visit pricing: $45–$85 per visit depending on size and depth
  • Walkway add-on: $50–$150 additional seasonally
  • Salting: Often included in premium plans, $10–$20 per visit otherwise

Beware of prices significantly below these ranges — they're usually a sign of underinsured operators, no-shows during heavy storms, or a one-person operation that can't scale when it really snows.

5 questions to ask before hiring a snow removal company

  1. Are you licensed and insured? (Get proof — not just a "yes")
  2. What is your trigger depth, and what happens during a multi-day storm?
  3. How do you handle damage to my driveway or lawn edges?
  4. What's your no-show policy and how do I reach you during a storm?
  5. Can I see references from customers in my specific neighbourhood?
