Spring Lawn Care Checklist for GTA Homeowners

After a long Ontario winter, your lawn needs specific care to bounce back. Here's exactly what to do — and when — to get your grass thick and green before summer.

Spring in the GTA arrives fast and unforgiving. One week your lawn is under snow, the next it's exposed, matted, and desperate for attention. Miss this window and you'll spend the rest of summer fighting weeds, bare patches, and poor colour.

Here's the checklist we follow for every property we take on in spring — adapted for Ontario's climate.

1. Wait for the soil to dry (don't rush)

Walking on waterlogged soil compacts it, which kills root growth. In the GTA, this usually means waiting until late April before doing any heavy work. Do the "footprint test": step on your lawn and check if it springs back within a few seconds. If it does, you're safe to proceed.

2. Dethatch if needed

Thatch is the layer of dead grass and roots that builds up between the soil and living blades. A layer thicker than ½ inch blocks water, air, and nutrients. Use a dethatching rake or power dethatcher if you're dealing with more than a small patch.

3. Rake out winter debris

Remove leaves, twigs, and dead patches left over from the fall. Pay attention to areas under trees and along fence lines where debris collects. Leaving it causes "snow mould" — a fungal problem common in Ontario after heavy winters.

4. Aerate compacted areas

If your lawn gets heavy foot traffic or has clay-heavy soil (common in much of the GTA), aeration dramatically improves how water and nutrients reach the roots. Core aeration (pulling actual plugs of soil) beats spike aeration every time. Best done in late April to mid-May.

5. Overseed thin or bare patches

After dethatching and aerating, overseed any bare areas with a mix suited for Ontario — tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, or perennial ryegrass all work well in our climate. Keep the seed moist for 2–3 weeks while it germinates. Don't seed too early — soil temperature needs to be at least 8–10°C consistently.

6. Apply a slow-release spring fertilizer

In late April or early May, apply a balanced slow-release nitrogen fertilizer (something like 30-0-4). Avoid quick-release fertilizers in spring — they push fast top growth at the expense of deep root development, which you'll regret in July when the heat hits.

7. Set your mower height correctly

For the first cut of the season, mow at 3–3.5 inches. Never remove more than one-third of the blade at once (the "one-third rule"). Cutting too short in spring stresses the grass and invites weeds to fill the gaps.

8. Edge and define your beds

Clean edges between lawn and garden beds instantly improve curb appeal by 10x. Use a half-moon edger or bed-edging tool to redefine the border. Even an average lawn looks sharp with crisp edges.

Timing cheat sheet for GTA homeowners

  • Late March – Early April: Rake debris, assess winter damage
  • Mid-April: Dethatch once soil is dry, aerate compacted areas
  • Late April – Early May: Overseed bare patches, apply spring fertilizer
  • May onward: Begin regular mowing schedule (every 5–7 days)

If this feels overwhelming, we handle the entire spring cleanup — raking, dethatching, edging, and hauling — as a one-time or recurring service. Most GTA homes take us 2–3 hours to get in top shape.
