Lawn Overseeding

About this service

Overseeding is adding new grass seed to an existing lawn to fill in thin areas, improve density, and crowd out weeds. It's not the same as starting from scratch — it works with what's already there. Professional overseeding includes soil preparation (aeration and dethatching), seed selection appropriate for your lawn type and Ontario's climate, even distribution, and starter fertilizer. Done right in the right window (late August–September, or spring), most lawns show visible improvement within one growing season.

What's included

  • Core aeration before seeding (dramatically improves germination)
  • Ontario-appropriate seed blend selection
  • Starter fertilizer application
  • Even distribution across all thin areas
  • Post-application care guidance
  • Optional follow-up assessment

How it works

1

Mow short

We mow your lawn to 1.5–2 inches to reduce competition from existing grass and expose the soil for seed contact.

2

Dethatch

Any thatch over ½ inch is removed. Seed needs soil contact — it won't germinate on a thatch mat.

3

Core aerate

Aerating before seeding is one of the highest-impact steps. Seed falls into the holes and has perfect contact, moisture, and protection.

4

Seed application

We apply seed at the overseeding rate (higher than new lawn seeding) using a calibrated broadcast spreader.

5

Starter fertilizer

A phosphorus-rich starter fertilizer is applied to feed new root development — not the same as regular lawn fertilizer.

Common questions

Best time of year for overseeding in Ontario?

Late August through mid-September is the primary window. Soil is still warm, less weed competition, and seedlings have 6–8 weeks before frost. Spring (late April–May) is the secondary window.

How long until I see results?

Perennial ryegrass germinates in 7–10 days. Bluegrass takes 14–21 days. You'll see thin green fuzz first, then gradual thickening over 6–8 weeks.

Do I need to stay off my lawn?

Minimize traffic for the first 3–4 weeks. New seedlings are fragile until they establish. After the first full mowing, normal use is fine.

Will overseeding fix my whole lawn?

Overseeding dramatically improves thin, patchy areas. It won't fix underlying drainage problems or compaction without also addressing those. We assess your lawn and tell you if there's a bigger issue.
